A Tale of Two Bridges

John Kelsall, Vice Chair of the Trust and Chair of Carlisle Flood Action Group, provided a fascinating insight into the history of bridging the River Eden in Carlisle to appreciative members of the Carlisle and District Civic Trust on Tuesday 20th February.

He illustrated the talk with a series of maps and historic paintings which traced the development of the city, the River Eden and its bridges. He explained how the River Eden developed two distinct channels which flowed either side of the historic Sands from 16th Century caused by a major flood event, eventually creating an ox-bow lake. John linked the importance of the bridge crossing with historical flooding of the City over the ages.
