David Ramshaw – Stanwix Talk

David Ramshaw, local historian and author, presented an entertaining and informative talk on Stanwix to a packed audience of members and guests of the Carlisle and District Civic Trust on Tuesday 22nd January.

He showed how Stanwix manages to both preserve its proud history and also adapt to changing needs by featuring many of its memorable aspects. These include its Roman fort; the River Eden bridges, as designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1815; its many grand buildings, its state of the art railway marshalling yards and even its pre-war trams.

As well as being illustrated by an intriguing mixture of forgotten pubs, mixed tennis matches and Victorian curling extravaganzas held on frozen ponds, David recalled that aeroplanes regularly flew from Kingstown aerodrome to the Isle of Man way back in the 1930s!
