Gordon Routledge – Longtown Talk

Gordon Routledge, local historian and author, presented a fascinating talk on the history of Longtown to a packed audience of members and guests of the Carlisle and District Civic Trust on Tuesday 19TH March.

Although Dr Robert Graham of Netherby Hall was responsible for laying out the town’s wide tree-lined streets, much of the town’s history has clearly been shaped by events involving passing armies, the Industrial Revolution and natural disasters.

It has also enjoyed a surprising number of famous visitors and curious facts.  Indeed, what other town in Cumbria could celebrate the visits of both Robbie Burns, the bard, and General William Booth of the Salvation Army, as well as recording the birth of a three legged chicken and unearthing record breaking monster potatoes!
