Max Loth-Hill: Carlisle Castle’s Spectacular History Talk

Max Loth-Hill, local historian, gave an entertaining and detailed talk on the history of Carlisle Castle to a packed audience of members and guests of the Carlisle and District Civic Trust on Tuesday 20th November.

He explained how the castle has played such a crucial role in so many conflicts across the centuries; it is no wonder that it is acknowledged as being the most besieged castle in England.

It is sobering to realise that its dour, austere walls have witnessed the residencies of both King William of Scotland and Edward the First of England; the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots and capture by Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite Army.
