Monthly Talks
The monthly Talks are open to all, whether member or non-member. Entry is only £4 for members or £6 for non-members, and only £10 to join for the year.
The talks are held at Waterton Hall, Warwick Square, Carlisle. Talks will commence with refreshments at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm talk. Everyone is very welcome to attend.
Tuesday 6th October 2025 – The Shaddongate Uprising of 1826
Mark Costello, of Carlisle’s Effectiveness Communities, tells the tragic and largely forgotten story of the 1826 Shaddongate election riot. This was sparked by prospective Tory parliamentary candidate Sir Philip Musgrave visiting Shaddongate to canvass support from one of the area’s few eligible voters. At the time, Shaddongate was home to many handloom weavers, including Scottish and Irish migrants, who were facing severe economic hardship and soaring food prices.
Soldiers based in the Castle were ordered to restore order. During the subsequent unrest, three local residents were shot and a fourth later died from injuries sustained in the unrest.
Tuesday 3rd November 2025– The Story of Carlisle
Tom Snaith, local historian, delivers what will surely be a fascinating and illuminating talk on the Story of Carlisle. Tom is bound to provide amusing and knowledgeable anecdotes about many phases of the city’s development and its illustrious visitors through the ages.
